From the time they arrived in the U.S. in 1859, the Sisters of the Holy Names have been committed to reducing their impact on the environment. Today, care/stewardship of the earth is a living legacy of the Sisters’ work, including their stand that water is a basic human right. The Sisters recognize that the planet is facing dire threats from human activity and are committed to shaping a healthy future for the generations to come. Holy Names Heritage Center is proud to join with the Sisters in providing educational opportunities to encourage sustainable living and protecting the earths assets for the future.

The Center encourages and develops opportunity for individuals to discuss pressing ecological challenges and forge creative solutions. These programs are not a lectures but rather a dialogue. The Heritage Center, in collaboration with other legacy minded organizations, is looking at ways to develop additional education programs on sustainable, responsible living, including discussion groups, and community outreach events. The Heritage Center’s Caring for the Earth program is funded, in part, by a gift from John and Jane Emrick, acclaimed pioneers in the environmental movement, and a matching trustee grant from the Meyer Memorial Trust.

The Heritage Center’s was built upon land that the Sisters’ have cared for preserved for more than 100 years. The Heritage Center building incorporated many green building principles including the use of low-VOC materials, occupancy sensors and daylight control features on light fixtures, nontoxic formaldehyde-free materials, energy efficient appliances, and on-site storm water retention and treatment with the use of bio-swales and low-water plants in the garden. The Center maintains an active recycling program and encourages caterers who incorporate sustainable food practices. Holy Names Heritage Center is committed to partnering with other organizations to develop strategies to meet the environmental challenges of our times.
