SUSTAINABILITY
From the time they arrived in the U.S. in 1859, the Sisters of the Holy Names have been committed to reducing their impact on the environment. Today, stewardship of the earth is at the heart of the Sisters' work, including their stand that water is a basic human right. The Sisters recognize that the planet is facing dire threats from human activity and are committed to shaping a healthy future for the generations to come. Holy Names Heritage Center is proud to join with the Sisters in providing educational opportunities to encourage sustainable living.
The Center's signature sustainability program is Ecolutions, a happy hour event for young professionals with a passion for the environment. Ecolutions is an opportunity for individuals to discuss pressing ecological challenges and forge creative solutions. The program is not a lecture series but rather a dialogue between sustainability pioneers and today's young leaders. The Heritage Center is developing additional education programs on sustainable living, including activities for school-age children, discussion groups for adults, and community outreach events. The Heritage Center's environmental programs are funded, in part, by a gift from John and Jane Emrick, acclaimed pioneers in the environmental movement, and a matching trustee grant from the Meyer Memorial Trust
The Heritage Center's construction incorporated many green building principles including the use of low-VOC materials, occupancy sensors and daylight control features on light fixtures, nontoxic formaldehyde-free materials, energy efficient appliances, and
on-site storm water retention and treatment with the use of bio-swales and low-water plants in the garden. The Center maintains an active recycling program and encourages caterers who incorporate sustainable food practices. Holy Names Heritage Center is committed to partnering with other organizations to develop strategies to meet the environmental challenges of our times.
